Christmas Present - toys for the boys

AutoSkim in action

For some reason lads just seem to love AutoSkim. It appeals to the boy-racer mentality in us all. We want to read quicker and faster and have an advantage over others. Have a skill that we can display. AutoSkim suits this perfectly.

AutoSkim removes unimportant words so you can read quicker. (Up to 50%).
… Now isn’t that a nice idea …

Accessibility format = Speed Reading format

Shows Banner Reader in action

We regularly measure reading speed under different circumstances. In relation to formatting we’ve found that similar requirements are very beneficial to both the visually impaired and those simply wishing to read faster … a lot faster.

Those with normal sight gain little additional benefit when the text is presented above font size 24 (decent screen). Obviously, the visually impaired can continue to get great benefit with further increased font size. However, the interesting thing is that most people can only take in a few words at a time. And if only a few words are to be displayed then the font size can be enormous with no loss to the normal sighted and benefit to the impaired.

The ReadPal way of sequentially displaying words from your emails, webpages and documents allows you to keep focusing on the one spot and brings the words to your eyes. NOT as usual where your eyes have to find the next word and then re-focus. This clearly saves time and there is less work for tired eyes. However, because the visually impaired have difficulty even finding the words to focus on we’d expect the benefits to be disproportionately large.

Accessible pages -34% faster for the rest of us to navigate

My thanks to Smiley Cat for digging up this one. The Disability Rights Commission did a survey of 1,000 sites and found those that were Accessible could be navigated much quicker by the able-bodied too.

As previously mentioned, we’ve found something similar too for reading. If you optimise the reading experience for those with some visual impairment the rest of us can read the text much faster too. Up to twice as fast , depending on the circumstances. This makes perfect sense. If it is easier for the eyes to focus on something they can do the job quicker. ReadPal simply automates this for the user so they don’t have to rely on web-designers with a different agenda. They can always read in their preferred fonts, size and colors.

Pructivity -increase the productivity of your number # 1 use of computers

We spend more time reading at our computers than any other work activity. (Unless you work in a sleep lab). So reading efficiency and productivity are key to your overall effectiveness.

Most documents are written in small fonts using Times New Roman or Currier fonts. This is a disaster for on-screen reading. One of the reasons so many people print documents just to read them.

If you spend a lot of work-time reading ReadPal can transform your office productivity by helping you zip through those documents and emails. Its reading modes are configured to give maximum speed and comfort. Not only do you read faster but there is less glare and eye-strain … so you’ll leave work feeling refreshed. (No guarantees - we can’t do much about your boss).

ReadPal will work with the Microsoft Office productivity suite, (MS Word, Outlook, Internet Explorer, text files).

So download it now and see how much quicker you’ll be getting through your work. Productivity for the office worker

Speed Reading Program - The official launch

ReadPal’s Speed Reading Bundle is now officially up and running. Thank you to all of you who gave feedback and suggestions, (even those hard to palate!).

The Bundle has some unique features. There is the incomparable ReadPal. This has a double benefit. Increasing your reading speed is primarily about training and habit. However, most speed reading programs do not integrate with Microsoft applications. This means that whenever they go back to reading on-screen there is a tendency to slow down. (People normally read much more slowly on-screen and this lower speed becomes ingrained; see ReadPal for all the reasons why). Using ReadPal you can set you new reading speed and it will present everything you read at this new speed.

Secondly, you can practice doing your drills and exercises on most material so you save time. E.g. you can do many of the exercises, using ReadPal, on your study or work material; stuff you need to read anyway.

The course content is set out in the speed reading PDF. This not only gives the background and theory of speed reading techniques it intergrates with and guides you through the exercises.

Lastly, at only $79, it is great value. Visit the site for full details.

Speed-read Ulysses or bluff it? - The answer.

So I spent the day reading it. Actually it is very doable, so long as you don’t get bogged down trying to understand it! Parts of it are very plain even to an oaf like myself. Some of it I found enjoyable.

I must confess I resorted to using the AutoSkim function as my schedule was thrown out due to the World Cup. (Ghana and the Czechs were having a cracking game). If you haven’t used it AutoSkim removes unnecessary words so you can read or skim much faster.
I’ll leave the text of Ulysses up on the ReadPal site for you to download. (You can also try AutoSkim - let me know how you get on).

Speed-read Ulysses or bluff it?

I’m an Irishman, went to the same school as Joyce, sat in the same desk as him and have never finished Ulysses. It’s embarrassing. What’s more despite my best efforts to the contrary my friends seem to think I’m the literary sort.
Oh, I can bluff my way all right, discuss the narrative, his style, punctuation or lack of, influence on modern literature, my God, I can even quote from it. But as of today I’ve never read more than a couple hundred pages (and the last bit).

So I’ll read it tomorrow. The only way I’ll get through it is by using ReadPal to force the pace. (Afterall it is a big book).

I’ve posted it up on ReadPal so you can read it too. (Click here for Ulysses text file and Free trial of ReadPal). If you want to learn to speed read I recommend my book, (surprise, surprise) at Amazon.

Let me know if you finish it tomorrow also.

Happy Reading,
Dedalus.

Speed Reading; reading, only faster!

Comments

The apparent discrepancy between the displayed words per minute and the actual words per minute.

ReadPal uses a number of tricks in order to optimise the reading experience for the user. For instance, headings are displayed for a longer period of time and are followed by a pause. There is a pause after a sentence and a longer one after a paragraph. This greatly helps you to absorb the words at a higher speed. However, as one document is very different to the next the user would need to wildly adjust the ‘actual’ words per minute in order to read at his or her maximum speed. To save the user this trouble they just set a speed that is optimal for them on any given document. ReadPal then allows these variations in the documents to passively adjust the actual words per minute for a good reading experience.

There are about a dozen factors that influence the actual words per minute, these differ from the Sentence to the Banner modes. E.g. in the Sentence mode short sentences are displayed for a disproportionately long period because there is some ‘dead time’ while the eye adjusts to the new sentence and this is (obviously) proportionately greater for short sentences.

Also note that the words per screen is an ‘intelligent’ average that makes reading easier by not treating all words as equal. “The cat sat…” is easier to read than “…institutionalized autocratic tendencies…” so they are treated differently, even though both are three words long.

ReadPal for the best reading experience.

Clearing up which downloads are Free

People rave about ReadPal. They love it; they tell us so. They say how they get through reading quicker and with less hassle. Some are then disappointed they can’t use it for ever, for free.

As a general rule ReadPal is free for up to two weeks. It costs $39 to use beyond this time. (We need to make a living out of this.) We have given out some free licenses in the past to people who give us feedback. We are particularly interested in the usage patterns of dyslexia or if you have useful suggestions then you can use the coupon LOUIS100 to get it free, forever. As long as this coupon is not being abused then we’ll leave it active.

There are other groups that we would like to give the product to for free. If you work for a registered charity you can also use this coupon for your work computer. (Tell everyone in your charity that it is totally free for them - another bonus for your good works!). Lastly, if you are too poor to afford ReadPal we’d prefer that you benefited from our technology than not use it at all.

I hope that makes things a little clearer!

Louis

ReadPal helps us all read faster on-screen with less hassle and visual stress. Try it for 2 weeks and see how it makes your life a little easier.
