Making Gutenberg books readable.

The Project Gutenberg library of ebooks is truly a gift to humanity. In case you don’t know it is a repository of 20,000 books that are out of copy-right. (Most books published pre 1930). Only problem is they are in text format - not nice to read for a page or two - impossible to get through a whole book.

With ReadPal this treasure trove is accessible to all. Reading the books becomes a pleasure once more. My friends are always surprised when I tell them that I read in bed - with my laptop! I use the full-screen mode, massive font size, auto-scrolling and the laptop at my feet. (Secured in case I fall asleep).

We’ve bundled a dozen free ebooks with ReadPal so you can start your Library off. They are selected from the Gutenberg Top 100 hit-list.

For general reviews and views on reading on-screen TeleRead is a good place to start.

It is free for individuals and charities so download now!

Speed-read Ulysses or bluff it? - The answer.

So I spent the day reading it. Actually it is very doable, so long as you don’t get bogged down trying to understand it! Parts of it are very plain even to an oaf like myself. Some of it I found enjoyable.

I must confess I resorted to using the AutoSkim function as my schedule was thrown out due to the World Cup. (Ghana and the Czechs were having a cracking game). If you haven’t used it AutoSkim removes unnecessary words so you can read or skim much faster.
I’ll leave the text of Ulysses up on the ReadPal site for you to download. (You can also try AutoSkim - let me know how you get on).

Speed-read Ulysses or bluff it?

I’m an Irishman, went to the same school as Joyce, sat in the same desk as him and have never finished Ulysses. It’s embarrassing. What’s more despite my best efforts to the contrary my friends seem to think I’m the literary sort.
Oh, I can bluff my way all right, discuss the narrative, his style, punctuation or lack of, influence on modern literature, my God, I can even quote from it. But as of today I’ve never read more than a couple hundred pages (and the last bit).

So I’ll read it tomorrow. The only way I’ll get through it is by using ReadPal to force the pace. (Afterall it is a big book).

I’ve posted it up on ReadPal so you can read it too. (Click here for Ulysses text file and Free trial of ReadPal). If you want to learn to speed read I recommend my book, (surprise, surprise) at Amazon.

Let me know if you finish it tomorrow also.

Happy Reading,
Dedalus.

Fried kidnies on Bloomsday, eat al…

Tomorrow being Bloomsday I thought I’d remind you all to stock up properly for your literary breakfast. Being a Dubliner I’m tempted to go down to Sandycove. A friend lives within spitting distance of the Martello Tower.
I’ve placed up the text file of Ulysses for you to download. ReadPal is the only way to read it on-screen. (Although the Sentence Reader struggles, as you know, sentences can go on for pages).

Happy reading … and no naughty thoughts

Deficiencies of the English language

Apparently English has ~250,000 words. But only one word for eyes. This is a travesty. English is lacking key words … e.g. there is no word or even short hand for the early morning – as in the early morning when you’ve been out clubbing the night before as opposed to getting up early for work. You arrive home at say 3-5am, there is no easy way to describe this time period. People from Northern Ireland call them the “wee hours” but this is not specific enough and it is two words as opposed to “afternoon”.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

The apparent discrepancy between the displayed words per minute and the actual words per minute.

ReadPal uses a number of tricks in order to optimise the reading experience for the user. For instance, headings are displayed for a longer period of time and are followed by a pause. There is a pause after a sentence and a longer one after a paragraph. This greatly helps you to absorb the words at a higher speed. However, as one document is very different to the next the user would need to wildly adjust the ‘actual’ words per minute in order to read at his or her maximum speed. To save the user this trouble they just set a speed that is optimal for them on any given document. ReadPal then allows these variations in the documents to passively adjust the actual words per minute for a good reading experience.

There are about a dozen factors that influence the actual words per minute, these differ from the Sentence to the Banner modes. E.g. in the Sentence mode short sentences are displayed for a disproportionately long period because there is some ‘dead time’ while the eye adjusts to the new sentence and this is (obviously) proportionately greater for short sentences.

Also note that the words per screen is an ‘intelligent’ average that makes reading easier by not treating all words as equal. “The cat sat…” is easier to read than “…institutionalized autocratic tendencies…” so they are treated differently, even though both are three words long.

ReadPal for the best reading experience.

grey’s anatomy -why so popular all of a sudden?

I note that grey’s anatomy is suddenly very popular in the blog searches. I am guessing this is yet another phenomenon due to the Da Vinci Code. The anatomical drawings / dead body mimicking them come from Leonardo Da Vinci’s notebooks. (These are available in text form, sorry only text, via ReadPal).
In relation to Grey’s Anatomy. I studied it in med college a long while ago and found that despite its great name it wasn’t very good for studying. It was trading on its heritage as the first great tome of anatomy.

If you are looking for free anatomy books you’ll find some at Project Gutenberg. They’ll be a bit old and verbose but you can’t complain when it’s free. Also anatomy is the ‘perfect science’ - i.e. the body hasn’t changed and there is little gross anatomy that can be left to discover. We are not going to discover a second nose!

Happy reading, as ever,

L.

Jane Eyre is now up on ReadPal

Hi,

Just alerting you that we have posted up a number of classic ebooks up on a hidden page in ReadPal. For those lovers of saucy literature we’ve included Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte.
Jane Eyre and other books
Jane Eyre was published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. It met with general acclaim until it became known that a woman had written it. It was not thought that a woman could write such a passionate novel and seem so knowing sexually. There was concern for her moral welfare as some of the book dealt with the “grosser and more animal portion of our nature”.

Happy reading,

L.
