How do I optimize my reading speed?
The Banner and Sentence reading modes will allow you to read more rapdily than the Column reader.  You set the pace and just keep up.  This prevents the normal slowing in speed that happens as people progress through a large document.  It also prevents the slowing in reading speed that happens when the words being read are in a large area of text.  Experiments using eye-tracking technology show that the eyes often loose their reading position, backtrack and reread words already read.  The eyes are also more likely to lose position in a large block of dense text.

The most efficient way to read using the Banner is to set the number of words per screen that you can absorb in a single glace or focus.  E.g. if two words per screen are displayed your eyes should be able to take in both words together, not read the first word and then the second.  Increase the speed until you find it difficult to keep up.  In order to make a good 'retinal imprint', (a clear image in the eye), about 250ms is typically needed.  This will equate to 3 or 4 screens per second.  As you progress beyond four screens per second people generally find it easier to display more words per screen, at a slower pace.

ReadPal uses a sophisticated set of rules to determine how words are presented to you. We have set the default to be suitable for the types of documents most commonly used. However, you may have special needs and you can customize them through the Options menu. What is the best way to read very long documents?
This depends on the type of reading you are doing. If you are reading a novel for fun and relaxation the Sentence Reader or Column Reader are probably the best reading modes. You should have the font large, (>18), with your favorite color combination. Press v for the Full Screen view.
